The Christmas Singing

Being that it's nearing the Christmas season, I was wanting to read a Christmas book so I chose to review "The Christmas Singing" by Cindy Woodsmall. This book really has nothing to do with Christmas though and is at best another Amish romance. The main character Mattie is an Amish cake decorator/baker that had her heart broken by her childhood love Gideon. When tragedy strikes for her she is forced to move back with her parents in Pennsylvania and see Gideon almost daily. She doesn't know the real reason he broke off their engagement so she is angry with him. Without giving away the ending, I will say that this is a typical Amish romance, and they all end the same. I wouldn't recommend this book unless you are in the mood for yet another Amish fiction book.

Departures: The Rediscovered stories by Robin Jones Gunn.
I was actually really looking forward to reading this book so I was excited to recieve it. I had read the entire Christy Miller series about 5 years ago and really enjoyed them. Though I am a bit older now,  I still enjoyed this book. It is actually 2 short stories in one. The first is about Christy Miller and her return home to Wisconsin after living in California for several years. Mostly, it is about Christy meeting up with and old grade school crush. It is quite cheesy in several parts but would be perfectly appropriate for a younger audience. In the second mini book, the main character is Sierra Jensen. She is on a trip with her friends and mostly the short story is about teenage girls flirting and chasing guys. I didn't really like this book as much as the first one but all in all it wasn't too bad. It would definitely be great for one who has read the Christy Miller series and Sierra Jensen series by Robin Jones Gunn and enjoyed them. I would recommend this book.

The Harvest of Grace by Cindy Woodsmall

"The Harvest of Grace"
Cindy Woodsmall
This is the first book I had ever read by this author and one of the very few Amish fiction books I have read. I live in a rural community where a good percentage of the population is Amish so I have a good background with that. My personal experiences didn't make this book any easier to follow though. The book starts out with one of the many main characters, Sylvia at her home in Pennsylvania. A betrayal by people she loves causes her to flee her home in search of work on a farm about a 1/2 hour away. In the next few chapters, many years are skipped and many new characters are introduced. I found all of this incredibly hard to follow. I finally figured out who most of the characters were by the end of the book, but this didn't make the book and enjoyable read. It is a long book with many unimportant details. The 330 page book probably could have been more effective in about 200 pages. Nevertheless, the ending of the book was good, albeit predictable. I am not a huge fan of Amish fiction so I wouldn't recommend this book. If you are a reader who enjoys Amish fiction that is mostly sappy romance you will probably enjoy this book.

The Crossing Serita Jakes

The Crossing by Serita Jakes.
"The Crossing" is an unexpectedly good book. It's actually my new favorite book. The main idea is a murder of a beloved teacher 10 years before. The main character Claudia is still suffering deep emotional wounds from that night so her husband decides to take up an investigation to find that killer from that night. The book is an exciting journey through the investigation, the victims' experiences and their healing. My only problem with the book is that the middle can move a bit slowly at times. Other than that, I loved it. The ending is truly wonderful and uplifting. I would recommend this book to everyone!

Worlds Collide by Allison Strobel

"World's Collide" by Allison Strobel.
I wasn't expecting much when I recieved this book as I had never heard of the author. I realized though, that she is the daughter of Lee Strobel, who's books I have read and thoroughly enjoy. This first book by Allison Strobel suprised be greatly. The main characters are Jack Harrington(a Hollywood film star) and Grace Winslowe(the typical American girl). They meet under less than ideal circumstances and this makes for an interesting story line. By reading the back of the book, it's obvious that the two opposites will eventually fall in love, but not without many bumps along the way. Parts of this book move incredibly slowly, and other, more important parts are just mentioned briefly. All in all though, this book was great. I loved that the whole story was the main characters talking from their point of view for a book about their life. I would recommend this book.
